The fashion giant Zalando has announced that it will use reusable packaging in a test run. According to it, 10,000 customers from Finland, Norway, Sweden, and Denmark should receive their orders in reusable mailing bags. The multiple uses of shipping and returns to reduce packaging waste and CO2 emissions, as shown in the press release.
Zalando is a europian E-commerce company situated in Germany. Main focus is on fashion and lifestyle products. It was founded in 2008 in Germany.
For the test run, Zalando puts on shipping bags of the Finnish startup “Repack”. They are very similar to the previously used Zalando shipping bags and are to be shipped from the logistics center in Brunna, near Stockholm. This could address two environmental problems. Reuse, unlike disposable packaging, would keep materials out of the waste stream and extend the life cycle of the original raw materials. In addition, the CO2 emissions should be reduced by up to 80 percent, as the company explains.
According to Uwe Streiber of the team Warehouse Consumables at Zalando, the challenge lies above all in the isolated solutions. “To make the concept of reusable packaging scalable, it takes the entire e-commerce industry,” he explains. Thus, it needs standardized processes and central dispensing possibilities for the reusable packaging. For example, a unified system in which the packaging could be dispensed in supermarkets, for example, would make the change easier for everyone, Streiber said.
In addition, the CO2 emissions should be reduced by up to 80 percent, as the company explains.
