AR is the artificial reality glass. AR smart glasses are a wearable transparent device that generates AR content within the scene of the user’s viewpoint. At its Connect event, Facebook announced AR glasses for 2021 in addition to the Oculus Quest 2. The smart glasses should come in the design of classic Ray-Ban glasses. All the big tech companies are now working on augmented reality glasses – including Amazon, Apple, Google and Intel. Now Facebook is also joining. At the start of the Facebook Connect conference, CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced smart glasses for private customers. AR glasses from Facebook will be on the market as early as 2021 – they will come in the design of classic Ray-Ban glasses, as The Verge reports .A year ago there was speculation about a cooperation with Ray-Ban maker Luxottica to develop AR glasses . Hugo Barra, Vice President for the Virtual Reality area at Facebook, explained via Twitter that the collaboration with Luxottica should have come about because of his acquaintance with Rocco Basilico. Basilico is CEO of the sunglasses specialist Luxottica subsidiary Oliver Peoples.

Developers from Facebook’s Reality Labs, which are working on VR and AR glasses, among other things, are said to have been to Luxottica factories and research centers in northern Italy to sound out a possible collaboration, according to Barra. The jointly developed AR glasses should reinvent fashion and technology, says Barra. The smart glasses, which should come on the market next year, are also just the beginning. But Barra was not more specific.

Zuckerberg, too , was noticeably reluctant to provide information on AR glasses, which were speculated about the coming soon in autumn 2019 . So far, it has only been confirmed that there will be no integrated display – so the device could be similar to the Snap Spectacles or Amazon’s Echo Frames. Facebook gave the glasses the code name Project Aria. A corresponding experimental prototype is to be tested in the coming days. It should be about things like privacy as well as video recordings and design. Meanwhile, Aria seems to be another step on the way to “real” AR glasses.Meanwhile, Zuckerberg presented the expected VR glasses Oculus Quest 2 at Connect . Videos of the new Oculus Quest generation were made public earlier this week. At 503 grams, the Oculus Quest 2 is lighter and also narrower than its predecessor . The resolution is 1,832 by 1,920 pixels. The device is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2. The memory comprises 64 gigabytes for the basic and 256 gigabytes for the more expensive model. The Oculus Quest 2 is scheduled to go on sale on October 13th and will cost from $ 299 in the US.
