The online publishing business is profitable. While it has not yet posted its full fourth quarter earnings, Bloomberg News reported that Amazon had generated $6.3 billion in revenue during the period—a substantial increase over a year ago when there were only roughly half as much print ads on Amazon’s site. “There was an incredible level of media attention and buzz around this announcement,” says Michael Tofelman at Strategy Analytics, who recently analyzed sales data for 300 magazines including Vanity Fair, Esquire (at one point), Vogue Daily —and The Washington Post himself.
