There are some people in the world who learn a new thing regularly. Are you on that list? If you’re tired of learning Spanish for the third time, scientists Joan Rubin and David Stern were looking for answers to this question. Their aim was to study good language learners to see if their methods could be taught to non-language learners and to help teachers reach out to language learners. The most important finding from the research is that anyone can learn a language well. And they’re right, according to Rubin, Stern and their colleagues at the University of California, Berkeley. You may have intelligence, and a good memory, but just having these skills does not make you a good learner. You can turn a scholar into a semester scholar – just ask yourself how many scholars you are in the world and how many new things have come out this year. You have to observe and copy the abilities of other people, not just your own, such as reading, writing, or listening. There are good learners who are always curious and willing to learn new things, not only in terms of knowledge but also in terms of curiosity. 

The question is: How do you learn more about your target language almost every day and how much more? People read and search and ask a lot, you ask a lot and read a lot, but you do not always have to learn. Depending on the student, you can use flashcards, video, or audio recordings to learn, just to name a few techniques. Over time, good language learners learn which methods work best for them in order to memorize the new vocabulary, grammar, and structure. There are different types of good language learners, just as there are different types of general learners (for example, some are auditory, visual, and kinesthetic learners, while others are visual learners and others are. Agile learners are good at connecting experiences, but they unlearn things when a novel solution is needed. They are willing to let go of perspectives and approaches that are no longer useful, and they unlearn things at the right time when new solutions are needed (e.g. in the context of a new project). The key skills a good teacher needs are a commitment to further education and a love of learning. Developing the ability to acquire new skills and master new situations is a fundamental element in learning agility. People with this attitude tend to focus on learning goals and not necessarily on the goals of the project or the team. 

Students must be willing to absorb knowledge and do their best to apply what they have learned to their lives. Continuously expanding one’s knowledge is the key to expanding students, whether it’s learning more about a subject, learning a new communication method, or even exploring how to bring more technology into the classroom. It’s important for teachers never to feel like they have to learn, but to remain open to new experiences. Every student experiences school differently, and one can improve and become a better student by trying these strategies.
